Running a business isn’t just about the work; it’s about balancing your life around it, especially when mental health is part of the equation. For me, managing Earth and Dusk and Inspire by Jessica Anna is a journey that’s deeply intertwined with my own mental health. Living with a mental illness diagnosis and other challenges, I’ve had to figure out how to keep my creativity alive while also taking care of my mind.
I've learned that if I don't take care of myself, everything else starts to fall apart. It’s easy to get lost in the demands of work. But I’ve realised that I have to hit pause sometimes. Whether it’s a walk in nature to clear my head, working another job on the side one or two days a week to mix things up, or just taking time to breathe, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s about checking in with myself and knowing when to step back.
When anxiety creeps in, it’s easy to forget why I started this journey in the first place. But I try to remember that every piece of jewellery I create and every story I write is a part of me. It’s not just about the end result; it’s about the process—the joy of creating something from nothing. By focusing on that joy, I’m able to push through the tough days.
I used to think I had to handle everything on my own, but that’s just not true. Having people around who get it—friends, family, other business owners—makes a world of difference. Sharing my experiences with them helps me feel less alone. If you’re dealing with something similar, don’t be afraid to reach out. We all need a little help sometimes.
I’m learning to embrace the messiness of it all. There are days when anxiety gets the best of me when things don’t go as planned, and that’s okay. I’m not perfect, and neither is my business. But that’s part of the journey. What matters is that I keep going, one step at a time, and that I’m kind to myself along the way.
Balancing mental health and running a business isn’t easy, but it’s possible. It’s about taking things at your own pace, being patient with yourself, and finding a way to make it all work. And if you’re on a similar path, just know that you’re not alone.
